![]() That led quite naturally to that determined seductress, Anne Boleyn, who gets her own story told in the next Young Royal, DOOMED QUEEN ANNE. In BEWARE, PRINCESS ELIZABETH, those roles are reversed. In MARY, BLOODY MARY, little Elizabeth is the rival. The challenge for me as a writer was to switch sides and to take my reader's sympathies with me. ![]() To say that the two step-sisters were never close is putting it mildly. Mary was seventeen when Elizabeth was born. Anne Boleyn got the job as Wife #2, but she too failed in her royal duty Elizabeth was her only child. ![]() When Mary's mother, Catherine of Aragon, failed to produce a male heir, Henry decided he needed a new wife. ![]() Both were the daughters of King Henry VIII, and if ever there was a sibling rivalry, it was this one. Writing a novel about Elizabeth was a no-brainer for me, once I had written about her half-sister, Mary. We call her Elizabeth I, to distinguish her from England's present queen, although of course she didn't think of herself as "the First" because she had no way of knowing if and when there would be another with the same name. Elizabeth is probably England's best-known queen. ![]()

![]() ![]() His humor takes us easily through all the ways children died back then–such as being flung thru windshields of cars due to no car seats. Richard tells of the various ways Australia was different back then–the title’s bemoaned lack of avocados being one way. There he did well enough to send Richard to a tony private school–something that would have been forever beyond his reach in the UK of that time. Richard Glover was the child of a Ten Pound Pom–an Englishman who accepted a bargain fare underwritten by the government to immigrate to Australia. Today I have another good friend in Australia, who, like me, grew up in the same era as this author. I remember the wife being surprised when recounting her time at Syracuse University in New York state, that she was expected to have a home phone even though she would be there less than two years! Even in 1989 that was unimaginable to me–an American. During my stint in Peace Corps in Malawi in 1989 to 1991 the other expatriates with whom I was friends were Australians. Likewise, her snappy dialog remains as strong as ever, especially whenever Adin spars with Donte. Maxfield's trademark humor remains, but it is far more subtly rendered and thus far more emotionally captivating. Maxfield successfully ventures from her wildly popular literary style into new territory with Notturno, a story about the struggles of a modern day antique literature collector who finds an ancient journal and tries to keep it, while the vampire who wrote it tries to get it back.
